Prioritizing Our Health: Small Steps for a Better Future

As minorities, we often face higher risks for certain diseases than other groups. Heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other preventable illnesses continue to impact our communities at alarming rates. The reasons are complex—access to healthy foods, healthcare, safe exercise spaces, and even the stress from daily life all play a role.
But here’s the truth: after long, emotionally and physically draining workdays, the last thing many of us feel like doing is exercising. We’re tired. We want to relax. And grabbing a quick meal from a restaurant often feels easier (and sometimes even cheaper) than cooking at home or preparing lunch for the next day.
Still, our health can’t be something we only think about after we’ve been diagnosed with a problem. It’s something we have to protect now. Making a little extra effort can have a big payoff in the long run.
That’s one of the reasons I started a walking program at work. It’s simple—just getting up, moving, and staying consistent. You’d be surprised how much a short walk can change your energy, mood, and mindset. Exercise isn’t just about losing weight or “looking fit.” It’s about taking care of your heart, your mind, and your overall wellbeing.
Eating healthier doesn’t have to mean going on strict diets or buying expensive specialty foods. It can start with small swaps—drinking more water, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, cooking one extra meal at home each week, or cutting back on fried and processed foods.
The truth is, investing in our health is one of the most powerful acts of self-care we can commit to. It’s not selfish—it’s necessary. Every step we take, whether it’s choosing to walk on our lunch break or packing a healthier lunch, brings us closer to living longer, feeling better, and breaking cycles that have affected our communities for generations.
Let’s make the time. Let’s make the effort. Our bodies, minds, and futures depend on it.
